HIFU skin lifting (Ultralift) uses High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound to deliver heat to targeted layers of the skin, including the SMAS layer, in order to lift, reduce sagging and stimulate new collagen — without surgery and without downtime. Most people feel a slight firming from the start, with results becoming more noticeable over 1–3 months. Results vary by individual.
What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound — a skin-lifting technology that focuses high-energy ultrasound waves onto targeted points beneath the skin, creating tiny heat points at selectable depths. This heat triggers the skin’s natural repair process, so the skin gradually looks tighter and the facial contour becomes more defined, all without an open surgical incision. The key strength of HIFU is its ability to deliver energy as deep as the SMAS layer — the same layer a surgeon lifts during a facelift.
How HIFU works and how it reaches the SMAS layer
HIFU’s ultrasound waves concentrate energy into focal points at various depths, creating localized thermal coagulation points without damaging the surface of the skin. Once the heat reaches the SMAS layer and the collagen layer, the tissue contracts slightly and immediately, and the body is prompted to produce new collagen and elastin in the period that follows — so the skin gradually lifts and firms. Your doctor selects the transducer and depth to suit each area and skin condition.
What can HIFU lifting help with?
HIFU focuses on lifting and refining the facial contour without surgery, and is well suited to early-to-moderate sagging:
- Lift the facial contour / refine a slimmer face — sharpens and lifts the jawline for a natural V-shape
- Reduce a double chin and submental fat — helps the jawline look smoother
- Firm the cheeks and nasolabial area — reduces age-related cheek sagging
- Firm the neck — reduces laxity and lines on the neck
- Stimulate collagen — gradually makes the skin look smoother, tighter and more elastic
How many HIFU types are there, and how deep do the transducers go?
HIFU works with transducers of several different depths, each delivering energy to a different skin layer to address a different concern. Doctors often combine several depths in a single session for complete care of both superficial and deep layers:
| Depth (typical) | Skin layer reached | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mm | Upper skin (epidermis / superficial dermis) | Smooth, refined skin, fine lines, pores |
| 3.0 mm | Deep dermis to subcutaneous | Collagen stimulation, skin firming |
| 4.5 mm | SMAS layer | Lifting, contour definition, reducing sagging |
There are also transducers for targeted body-fat reduction (for example 6.0–13.0 mm), which the doctor selects based on the area and goal. Having multiple depths makes it possible to design a treatment that is more precise and more natural. Results vary by individual.
Which areas can HIFU treat?
Your doctor will assess and select the areas best suited to your goals and shot count:
| Area | What it addresses |
|---|---|
| Facial contour / jawline | Lifting, defining the contour |
| Under-chin / double chin | Reducing laxity and submental fat |
| Cheeks / nasolabial folds | Firming sagging cheeks |
| Forehead / brows | Lifting the brows and firming the forehead |
| Neck | Firming the skin and reducing lines on the neck |
How many HIFU shots are right, and how to choose?
The number of shots depends on the area you want to treat and the degree of sagging. Your doctor will recommend an amount suited to your facial structure and goals at your consultation. In general:
| Option | Best for |
|---|---|
| HIFU 100 shots | Targeted touch-ups such as a double chin or under-chin, or to complement another treatment |
| HIFU 400 shots | Lifting a wider area, such as the facial contour and cheeks |
| HIFU 600 shots | Full-face and neck care, for those with more pronounced sagging |
See all options and prices in the table below. Choosing the right number of shots matters more than choosing the highest number — your doctor will help design the most cost-effective, well-targeted plan.
Does HIFU hurt?
During HIFU, many people feel warmth or a brief, rhythmic prickling as energy is released — especially over thinner skin or near bone. This sensation is momentary and fades once the device stops. The level of sensation varies by individual. Your doctor can adjust the energy level and offer guidance to make the treatment more comfortable; if you feel uncomfortable during the procedure, you can tell your doctor right away.
How long until HIFU works, and what are the results like?
HIFU delivers gradual results, because most of the effect comes from new collagen production, which takes time. In general:
| Timeframe | What happens |
|---|---|
| Immediately after | You may feel the skin slightly firmer from tissue contraction |
| 1–3 months | Collagen gradually rebuilds; the skin looks tighter and the contour more defined |
| ~6 months onward | Results gradually stabilize; a follow-up assessment is recommended for repeat care on schedule |
How long does HIFU last, and when should it be repeated?
HIFU results generally last about 6 months to 1 year, depending on skin condition, age, the initial degree of sagging and self-care. Doctors often recommend an assessment and a repeat treatment on schedule to maintain firmness over time. Keeping the skin well moisturized, applying sunscreen consistently and avoiding factors that accelerate skin aging all help results last better. Results vary by individual.
Who is HIFU suited for, and who should avoid it?
Suited for those who are beginning to see sagging around the facial contour, cheeks, under-chin, double chin or neck; those who want to lift without surgery and without downtime; and those who want to stimulate collagen for smoother, tighter-looking skin. Generally, treatment can begin once the first signs of sagging appear (often from the late 20s or 30s onward). Younger people whose skin has not yet started to sag may not need it yet. Your doctor will assess suitability on an individual basis.
Tell your doctor or avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an infected wound or inflamed skin in the treatment area, have an implanted electronic device, or have filler/implant material in the area to be treated — always tell your doctor first. Your doctor will take a history and assess suitability before every treatment.

Is HIFU dangerous? What are the side effects?
HIFU is safe when performed by a doctor using standard-compliant equipment at appropriate energy settings. The side effects seen are usually mild and temporary — such as redness, slight swelling, or a feeling of tightness or tingling in the treated area — which usually improve on their own within a few days. The most significant risk is treatment by someone who is not a doctor, using sub-standard equipment, or with inappropriate energy settings. Choose a licensed medical facility with a doctor performing the treatment.
How is HIFU different from Ulthera?
Both are ultrasound technologies for lifting that work on a similar principle: delivering heat to the deeper skin and the SMAS layer to stimulate collagen:
| HIFU (Ultralift) | Ulthera | |
|---|---|---|
| Principle | Focused ultrasound lifting | Focused ultrasound lifting |
| Highlight | An accessible, cost-effective lifting option | A brand with an ultrasound imaging guidance system |
| Repeat | Repeatable on a schedule your doctor recommends | Repeatable on a schedule your doctor recommends |
Your doctor will help recommend the option best suited to your skin condition, goals and budget.
How is HIFU different from Thermage / RF?
HIFU and Thermage (radiofrequency, RF) are different technologies that are often used to address complementary concerns. Many people combine them for more complete results:
| HIFU | Thermage / RF | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | Focused ultrasound | Radiofrequency |
| Strength | Lifting that reaches deep to the SMAS | Firming the upper skin and reducing laxity over a wide area |
| Sensation | Rhythmic warmth as energy is released | Warmth across the treated area |
Your doctor will assess which option, or which combination, is best suited to your skin.
How is HIFU different from a thread lift, and which to choose?
HIFU and thread lifts are both non-surgical ways to lift, but they work on different principles. HIFU uses heat energy to stimulate collagen from within, while a thread lift uses threads to lift mechanically. Many people combine them for more complete results:
| HIFU | Thread Lift | |
|---|---|---|
| Principle | Ultrasound stimulates collagen down to the SMAS layer | Threads are inserted to lift tissue directly |
| Needling | No needling required | Needling required to insert the threads |
| Best for | Early-to-moderate sagging, wanting to avoid needles | More pronounced sagging, wanting to see an immediate lift |
| Recovery | No downtime | May involve swelling and care of the treated area at first |
Both have their own strengths. Your doctor will help assess which option, or which combination, is best suited to your skin condition, goals and budget. Results vary by individual.
