Which type of dullness needs which laser?

Dull skin does not come from a single cause. Matching the device to the cause matters more than choosing the device with the better-known name.

How many sessions, and how far apart?

The common framework is that a change becomes noticeable after the second or third session, with a course of roughly 4–6 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart. The reason for the spacing is that skin needs time to turn over cells and build new collagen. Treating more frequently does not speed this up; it raises the risk of inflammation and subsequent darkening.

A difference worth knowing is that conditions where pigment sits superficially, such as sun-induced dark spots, tend to respond faster, whereas melasma is a chronic condition requiring ongoing treatment and carrying a tendency to recur. Expecting a single course to settle it does not match the nature of the condition.

After completing a course, many people continue at wider intervals, such as every 1–3 months, to maintain the condition of the skin. That is long-term care rather than treatment with a defined endpoint.

Does it hurt, and what are the risks?

The usual sensation is repeated warm snaps similar to a rubber band flick, at a level most people tolerate without anaesthetic — except for fractional treatments or thin-skinned areas, where doctors commonly apply topical anaesthetic first.

Side effects that occur commonly and usually settle on their own include redness and warmth in the first few hours, roughness or fine crusting with some modes, and mild dryness and flaking.

The risks that warrant genuine attention are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which occurs more often in deeper skin tones, and melasma flaring after treatment when energy is too high or sun protection inadequate. Both are handled far better when anticipated and planned for in advance.
