How do HIFU and Oligio differ? HIFU uses high-intensity ultrasound focused into individual points, delivering heat as deep as the SMAS layer at around 4.5 millimeters. Oligio uses monopolar radiofrequency at about 6.78 MHz, spreading heat throughout the dermis at roughly 2-4 millimeters. Different energy, different skin layers — so they address different concerns and can complement each other.

What Is HIFU?

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) uses high-frequency sound waves to concentrate energy into tiny points beneath the skin, generating high heat at those specific points so the tissue contracts and the body’s natural repair process begins. These heat points are called thermal coagulation points, and the topmost layer of skin is not damaged, because the energy is focused past it down to the preset depth.

HIFU cartridges usually offer several depths to choose from — for example 1.5 millimeters for the superficial dermis, 3.0 millimeters for the deep dermis and part of the fat layer, and 4.5 millimeters, which can reach the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), the muscle-fascia layer that surgeons use as a reference in a face lift. Being able to reach this layer without surgery is why HIFU is used for laxity of the facial framework, although the degree of the result is not equivalent to surgical face lifting.

Histological studies report that focused ultrasound can stimulate collagen production in both the dermis and the SMAS layer (see the references at the end of this article, which include both human and animal studies), while the effect on the fat layer is fairly limited. In practice this means HIFU is mainly about tightening and lifting, not about breaking down fat.

In Thai, the name is written both ไฮฟู่ and ไฮฟู, which refer to the same technology. What matters more than the spelling is the device model, the depth of the cartridge used, and the number of shots you will receive.

What Is Oligio?

Oligio is a monopolar radiofrequency skin-tightening device from Wontech of South Korea. It works at a frequency of about 6.78 MHz, delivering energy through the treatment tip to generate heat in the dermis. This heat, spread across the area, stimulates existing collagen to contract and stimulates the production of new collagen in the period that follows.

Unlike HIFU, which focuses energy into deep individual points, radiofrequency provides volumetric heating spread through the dermis at a level of roughly 2-4 millimeters. It is therefore suited to concerns that are spread across an area, such as skin that looks tired, overall looseness across the face, fine lines, and pores that look wider with age.

The features the manufacturer highlights are sensor systems that measure skin temperature, pressure, and contact of the return pad to help keep energy delivery consistent, along with surface cooling and a vibration system to help you feel more comfortable during treatment. There are studies that evaluated monopolar radiofrequency for tightening facial skin and reported both clinical changes and changes in the mechanical properties of the skin, with the degree of response differing by each person’s age and skin condition.

Oligio is often compared with other monopolar RF lifting devices, since they share the same underlying principle and differ mainly in the details of each device.

How Do HIFU and Oligio Differ?

The real difference starts with the physics of the energy. HIFU uses sound waves focused into points in the deeper layers, while Oligio uses radiofrequency to spread heat across an area in a shallower layer. What follows from that differs too: the concerns each addresses, the sensation during treatment, and the price range.

Mechanically, HIFU creates separate heat points while leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, which produces fairly distinct contraction along the depth axis in the area treated. The spread-out heat of radiofrequency, by contrast, covers a continuous area, so the outcome shows up more in overall skin quality and skin elasticity than in point-by-point lifting of the facial framework.

The sensation is clearly different as well. HIFU often produces a sharp, deep tingling in rhythm along each treatment line, while Oligio feels like brief hot pulses shot by shot across the area. Neither is surgery, and most people do not need days of downtime.

Every Oligio package at the clinic comes with a complimentary HIFU at the shot count you choose — for example, Oligio 100 shot comes with a complimentary HIFU 100 shot, and Oligio 600 shot comes with a complimentary HIFU 600 shot. The shot count that suits each person depends on the area to be treated and the plan the doctor assesses; more is not always better.

Who Is It For, and Which Should You Choose?

The simple rule is to look at which layer your concern sits in. If it is deep laxity of the facial framework, HIFU is often the option a doctor considers first. If it is a matter of skin quality and overall looseness across the face, radiofrequency such as Oligio is often the option a doctor considers, because it works mainly in the dermis.

Cases where doctors often consider HIFU:

  • A double chin under the chin or jaw that is becoming noticeable
  • A facial contour and jawline that look less defined than before
  • Cheeks and nasolabial folds that look like they are sagging with gravity
  • Wanting to address deep laxity without surgery

Cases where doctors often consider Oligio:

  • Skin that looks tired, lacks elasticity, and is loose across the whole face
  • Fine lines on the forehead, at the outer corners of the eyes, or around the mouth
  • Pores that look wider and skin that looks less smooth than it used to
  • Wanting to care for overall skin quality along with firmness

In practice, many people have a mix of both concerns, and age, the thickness of the fat layer, bone structure, and a history of other procedures all affect the choice. In cases with significant skin laxity or clearly excess tissue, external energy alone may not address everything. An in-person assessment at the clinic therefore matters more than choosing by device name.

Can HIFU and Oligio Be Combined?

They can be combined in many cases, because the different types of energy work on different skin layers. Whether to combine them depends on the doctor’s assessment.

The idea is to use radiofrequency to care for the dermis so the skin looks smoother and more elastic across the whole area, alongside focused ultrasound that goes deeper to address laxity in the specific spots you want lifted, such as under the chin, along the jawline, or the outer cheeks. There are studies that evaluated radiofrequency combined with focused ultrasound for skin rejuvenation, and those studies reported the results of using the two types of energy together compared with using one alone. That said, this reflects the devices and parameters of those studies, and is not a confirmation of the result for every device or every person (see the references at the end of this article).

On sequence and spacing, a doctor may choose to do both on the same day, working from the deeper layer to the shallower one, or to space them out by weeks to reduce the heat load on the skin in a single session. The factors considered include skin sensitivity, a history of irritation, and tolerance for the sensation, so there is no single formula that works for everyone.

At Onnyx Clinic, every Oligio package comes with a complimentary HIFU at the shot count you choose — for example, Oligio 200 shot comes with a complimentary HIFU 200 shot — which makes it possible to plan care for both the deep layer and the dermis together in one course. The doctor determines the areas and the energy levels. There is no guarantee of results, and results differ from person to person.

How Long Do the Results Last, and How Often Should You Repeat?

Both HIFU and Oligio produce results that appear gradually; the results are not immediate. Information from manufacturers and clinics generally indicates that results may last around 1-2 years after one course, and treatments are usually repeated about 1-2 times per year.

The common timeline is that in the first period after treatment the skin may look slightly firmer from the contraction of existing collagen and from temporary swelling. After that, the effect of newly formed collagen appears gradually over roughly 2-6 months, which is the stage when some people may start to notice changes in the jawline or in skin smoothness. The degree of change differs from person to person, and some people may not see a clear change.

How long the results last depends on age and the natural rate of collagen decline, sun protection, smoking, weight changes, and genetics. The results are not permanent, because the skin’s aging process carries on as usual. Repeating periodically is therefore a form of ongoing care, and doctors usually assess it from the skin condition at each stage. Treating more frequently than the doctor specifies is not recommended, because applying heat again over too short an interval may not add to the result and may increase the chance of skin irritation.

Who Should Be Cautious, and How to Care Before and After

Both procedures are non-surgical options, but they are not suitable for everyone. There are health conditions and skin conditions you should tell the doctor about beforehand so suitability can be assessed.

Groups who should consult a doctor in detail or may not be suited to the procedures:

  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with implanted electronic devices, such as a pacemaker, which is a precaution for RF treatment
  • People with an infection, an open wound, inflamed rashes, or severe inflamed acne in the area to be treated
  • People with certain skin diseases, or with raised scars or keloids
  • People who have recently had filler, thread lifting, or other procedures in the same area, who should state the type and the timing
  • People taking certain groups of medication, such as oral vitamin A derivatives or medications that make the skin sensitive to light

Before treatment, you should tell the doctor your health history, medications, and the products you currently use, and avoid harsh exfoliation in the period beforehand as advised. After treatment, in general keep the skin well moisturized, apply sunscreen consistently, and avoid intense heat such as saunas or steam rooms in the initial period. There may be redness, warm skin, mild swelling, or tenderness for a short period, which usually settles on its own. If you have unusual symptoms or they do not settle, go back to the doctor at the clinic for an assessment.

How to Tell Whether the Device and Treatment Tip Are Genuine

The most direct way is to ask for the details before treatment begins. Clinics that give straightforward information can usually answer these questions right away.

  • The model of the device and the manufacturer — for example Oligio from Wontech, and the HIFU model in use
  • The origin of the treatment tip, and having a new tip unsealed in front of you before treatment begins
  • The number of shots stated in the package versus the number you actually receive, including complimentary shots
  • The depth of the HIFU cartridge used in each area
  • A doctor assessing and overseeing the treatment

Asking these questions helps you compare prices between clinics more fairly, because price differences are usually explained by the number of shots, the treatment-tip model, and who performs the procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more suitable for someone with a double chin and an indistinct jawline, HIFU or Oligio? +

When the laxity comes from deeper tissue — such as a double chin under the jaw or a facial contour that looks less defined — doctors often consider HIFU as one option, because focused ultrasound energy can reach the SMAS layer. That said, the thickness of the fat layer and the actual degree of laxity have to be assessed first, since some cases may need a different approach as well.

For skin that looks tired, enlarged pores, and fine lines, which should I choose? +

Concerns that sit in the dermis — such as skin that looks tired, overall looseness across the face, fine lines, and pores that look wider with age — are usually the target of the spread-out heat from radiofrequency such as Oligio, because it heats an area broadly, unlike ultrasound that focuses into deep individual points. The two work on different skin layers, so neither one suits everyone. Results depend on each person's skin condition.

Can HIFU and Oligio be done on the same day? +

Many clinics, and some studies as well, use focused ultrasound together with radiofrequency for skin care, since they work on different layers. Whether they are done on the same day or spaced apart depends on the doctor's assessment, your skin condition, and each person's tolerance for heat. You should not decide on your own without consulting a doctor.

Does it hurt, and how do the sensations differ? +

HIFU often produces a sharp, deep tingling sensation at the points along each treatment line, and some people feel it resonate toward the bone in certain spots. Oligio, by contrast, feels like brief hot pulses shot by shot across the area, with cooling and vibration systems to help reduce the sensation. Sensation varies by individual, and the doctor can adjust the energy level to suit each person's tolerance.

How long do the results last, and how often do I need to repeat? +

Information from manufacturers and clinics generally indicates that results may last about 1-2 years after one course, with results appearing gradually over roughly 2-6 months. The repeat frequency is usually about 1-2 times per year, per the doctor's assessment. There is no guarantee of results, and the results are not permanent.

What are the prices of HIFU and Oligio at Onnyx Clinic? +

HIFU is available at 100 shot THB 1,500, 400 shot THB 3,999, and 600 shot THB 5,500. Oligio starts at 100 shot THB 6,500 and goes up to 600 shot THB 29,000, and every Oligio package comes with a complimentary HIFU at the shot count you choose — for example, Oligio 100 shot comes with a complimentary HIFU 100 shot.
