Reported effects include dry mouth, dry throat, constipation, headache, insomnia, palpitations, irregular heartbeat and raised blood pressure; in severe cases it has been linked to heart attack and stroke.

Mixed slimming sachets are another format to avoid. Several tablets are packed together to be taken at once, with the user unaware of what each one is. Some have been found to combine appetite suppressants, diuretics, laxatives, anti-anxiety medication and thyroid hormone. Receiving multiple drugs simultaneously without clear indications increases both side effects and interaction risk.

Warning signs of an unsafe product

• Sold without any doctor’s consultation or health history
• Advertised with weight figures achieved in implausibly short timeframes
• No verifiable drug registration or licence number
• Multiple tablets packed in one sachet with no active ingredients named
• Priced unusually low compared with properly registered medication
• Sold through personal accounts or channels that are not medical facilities
